Understanding Your Irish Childcare Entitlements
Every Irish parent is entitled to claim back certain tax credits, benefits and relief on childcare costs. If you’d like to talk to someone now about your entitlements and claiming your refunds from 2009 or the previous four years, talk to our Irish tax team in Kilkenny on 1800 991 805.
- Credits you can claim include:
- One parent family tax credit: The 2009 tax credit is €1,830
- Incapacitated child tax credit: The 2009 tax credit is €3,660
- Home carer’s tax credit: The 2009 tax credit is calculated based on your earnings and the maximum relief allowed is €900
- Reliefs you can claim include:
- Crèche benefit-in-kind: if your employers pay for or subsidise an independent crèche your child uses, the fees for this will be treated as a taxable benefit-in-kind. However, if in-house crèche facilities are provided by your employer this is not treated as benefit-in-kind and is therefore not taxable
- Childcare services: Minders caring for up to three children who are not their own children and who earn less than €15,000 per annum will get this amount tax free. If earnings exceed €15,000 the entire sum is taxable*.
- Benefits you can claim include:
- Early child supplement: Supplement of €41.50 per child under five
- Child benefit payments: Monthly allowance of €166 for first two children and €230 for all subsequent children
*To qualify for this exemption, minders should first register with the HSE then claim the exemption in their next annual tax return.
